Aliens Dump by Deer-in-Headlights Aliens Dump by Deer-in-Headlights
If you follow me on tumblr you've already seen these, basically there are three alien species and one alternate reality earthling species that I came up with to practice some creature designing. Here are their textdump stories if you're curious:

Cniphoniopes:
Uh-oh, more aliums! These are the Cniphoniopes, since there were a lot of cool different species to mashup names from :) About halfway through all this I realized that they are kind of a cross between hanar and elcor, but thatís okay.

The Cniphoniopesí home planet has a weak gravitational field despite being made up of mostly metal because of the powerful magnetic distortion of itís sun. As a result, the atmosphere consists of a layer near the surface that is watervapor, since the metal surface is too hot for liquid water to exist, and a liquid water layer in the upper atmosphere. So itís like an inside-out ocean. Using their hydrogen sacs, Cniphoniopes can rise and hunt in the ocean, or sink down to their settlements on land as they please. Since their planet is utterly saturated with water vapor, they donít have to worry about all that hydrogen combusting.

How can they live on the surface when itís superheated metal? Well, like humans, Cniphoniopes have domesticated other organisms to their advantage. Coral-like thermophiles that feed on the rust-byproducts of the metallic surface have left their skeletons, which, being made up of mostly salts, have a much higher specific heat capacity. These areas are cool enough to form water. Ancient Cniphoniopes took advantage of this, carefully caring for the polyps and influencing their growth to form great cities.

Just like Ethrects communicate visually and Sephaceans communicate verbally, Cniphoniopes also have a unique form of communication. Their primative nervenet has been replaced by ganglion for higher thinking in the cephalic region, but still persists in the tentacles, allowing nerve-impulses to travel by touch or short distances via conduction from the humid air. Unfortunately this is incompatible with other organisms and will probably kill you. It is speculated that this adaptation evolved from adapted nematocytes, which is likely seeing as the Cniphoniopes still retain nematocytic tails used by their ancestors for hunting. The ability to sense electric impulses from their tentacles is a useful one, since their eyes are rather primitive, not being of much use on such a fogged planet.

So each time I make up one of these guys Iím like, okay no way these guys would be able to make machines and stuffÖ but think about it, all we really had to do to get so advanced is have some fingers and a food source that didnít consume all of our time and energy to get to. But in whatever universe these guys live I kind of donít want there to be humans, since I feel like having a human character automatically puts everyone on their side, and it becomes a case of us vs. them. Anyway, darn that was a wall of text I am sooooo sorry.

Saurids:
So to get around the whole ďhuman problemĒ I previously mentioned, I made an ALTERNATE UNIVERSE where dinosaurs werenít hit by that dumbface meteor and evolved. I wanted to focus on different gender-roles for one of these guys so here they are.

So I took bower-bird tendencies and sexual dimorphism in songbirds and birds of prey and tried to make up a different culture. The smaller male is more colorful, and theyíve got plenty of dyes and makeups to make them look super-fancy. The ideal guy is both pretty and artistic, but also indirect and discrete. Basically the sexiest guy alive would be the super bright guy who is an architect of whimsical buildings (bowerbird sexy house awwwwww yeah). Girls on the other hand have the awkward position of being expected to be big, though and providing while also being wonderful nurturing mothers. So DONíT BE SENSITIVE EVER except if itís your baby, dammit! But they get along and live their lives.

Anyway, a waaaaaaaaay better version than mine of dinosauroids is this guys: [link] like he uses actual factual science like whoa

Erthrects:
Another alien species. Itís a lot more humanoid shaped but still insect-y. I never liked how in games and stuff there was always like 1 insect alien, 1 lizard alien and 1 mammalian alien, so hereís two arthropodlike species. So they used to be a more tiny size, but after an asteroid filled with nitrogenous and carbon matter collided with the planet, it opened up many niches for the insects and led to an extreme growth spurt in plant life. Tons of oxygen filled the atmosphere, allowing the insects to get HUGE. Eventually they couldnít fly so the wings, which already contained chromatophores for basic communications, became exclusively used to develop language. They also developed one leg out of 2 for more support, and now they have their own built in high heels! I was going to make up some gender differences to make up for the fact that Sephaceans didnít have any, but I didnít draw itÖ I guess males are usually more colorful and girls have bigger butts or something.

So, basically the two species were setting up for conflict since their cultures were just soooooo different since one is based on seeing and the other is blind and one is pretty small and the other is hulking and gender roles that donít exist to one of them. Erthrects (the buggy people) were more technologically advanced and were scared of sharing too much technology with the physically stronger Sephaceans, while the Sephaceans didnít like the fact they were trading labor to try to get to the Erthrects level and believed that they would try to enslave them. But due to two politicians meeting when they were larva, the groundwork for peaceful relations was laid :) They mostly live together on space stations though, since each planet is very specialized towards itís own species (a Sephacean would die from photorespiration from all that oxygen and an Erthrect would not be able to function in such low visibility, plus too much CO2.

Oh yeah, and at the bottom it shows what they evolved from, which was tiny insects with 3 pairs of wings, and for the other guys giant flesh-eating fishie crustaceans :O !

Sephaceans:
So I wanted to make a really outlandish alien that could still be personable enough to be regarded as a friend ally race. First of all they are from a planet that revolves around a dense and warm, but dim, white dwarf. This gives their planet low gravity, high temperatures and low light. Only the tiniest organisms can survive by photosynthesis alone, so there are no conventional plants. Instead, organism are motile and eat others as well as photosynthetic, like Euglena. These guys are sentient and cool. The reason they evolved on land is because the oceans are so warm there was not enough dissolved CO2 to keep the photosynthetic process going, so they evolved nostrils. However, they are still amphibious and their eggs and larva need water to grow. It was really hard for me not to make these guys super colorful as seen in the process pics, but on a world were you canít see and you need as much light energy as possible it just doesnít make sense. Plus I figured the best photoreceptor, retinol (aka the stuff in our eyes) would be black to absorb all the light it can on a dim planet. Also, since these guys just release they sex cells in the water they donít need a mating display or sexual dimorphism. They all take care of the cute little larva though. So yeah thatís their lives. If they went off world they would need CO2 canisters and another gas to keep them from falling over in the greater gravity. In a place with a bright sun like Earth their instinct would be to lay down and catch all the rays they can, which if they can get over that they can move a lot faster with all the excess energy.
